What’s your life expectancy? Well, it depends where you live…
W29 – Population.io by World Data Lab
Ever wondered how your life expectancy stacks up globally? If you enter your birth date, country of birth, and gender, population.io will reveal your unique position in the world population, including estimating how long you are likely to live.
Population.io was created by World Data Lab with the aim of making demography, the study of human populations, accessible to a wider audience. The hope is it will help people of all ages and from all walks of life around the world explore a new perspective on their own journey through life.
The project launched in 2014, and uses past and future projection data produced by the United Nations. Of course, life expectancy is determined by many factors, but population.io keeps it simple by just focusing on date and place of birth, and gender.
This tool is an excellent example of how complex data can be transformed into an engaging personal experience. It sparks reflection on healthcare inequalities in different countries while, at the same time, reminding us that we are all part of one global population.
