According to MIT, inaccessible data visualisations exclude millions of people from the opportunity to probe and interpret insights that are often presented through charts – such as election results, health statistics, and economic indicators.
So, as Global Accessibility Awareness Day fell this month, we’re showcasing Hear the Blind Spot, a campaign by Ethiopian charity Together! that turns survey and open data into sound (data sonification) and shares stories highlighting the digital exclusion problem for people with visual impairments.
Together! supports people with visual impairments, and created the campaign with funding from Data4Change. Valentina D'Efilippo– an award-winning data designer you may recognise from our ODI guest blog post showcasing ‘10 prominent data visualisations from the last 10 years’ – was also behind campaign.
